The commonest procedures that are done include laminectomy , discectomy and spine fixation. These procedures are usually done for three reasons. The first reason is compression of the spinal cord or the nerves which results in functional disability or pain. Several of these conditions can be treated with pain medicines and physiotherapy.
However when the functional status of the patients are being compromised or the pain is not being relieved by medicines we resort to surgeries. The second common reason for surgeries of the spine are abnormal mobility between various spine elements which give rise to pain while walking and also back pain. We usually put screws and rods to fix this abnormal mobility and relieve the patients of back pain and leg pain. Third common reason for spine surgeries are abnormal provisions of the spine which are called as kyphosis and scoliosis and again can be treated with the surgeries to prevent progression, correction of the curve and improve pain.
